COVID19 / Corona Virus Update
COVID19 / Corona Virus Update

Like many folks, I’ve been tracking the spread of COVID-19 very closely.

COVID-19 is the disease caused by this new coronavirus.

I thought it would be helpful to interrupt the usual circadian biological focus of this newsletter so I can share some information on this virus.

First and foremost, for those interested in tracking the spread of COVID-19, here is an excellent resource.

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

That link takes you to a GIS web page that is generated by John Hopkins University. It is updated every few hours. You can click on the US option on the left sidebar to see locations of confirmed cases/deaths in the United States.

Isn’t COVID-19 just like the flu? Why are people so concerned?

That’s a fair question.

At the time of writing (3/8/20) 3,802 have died from COVID-19 on a global level with a total of 109,711 confirmed cases and 60,694 recovered.

In contrast, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimates that about 56,000 Americans die from the flu every year. Here, I’m talking about the common flu, Influenza A.

However, the difference is…. the annual flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%, whereas COVID-19 appears to have a mortality rate of 2%. If that rate stays the same, then COVID-19 would be 20 times more lethal than the annual flu.

Below is an image from the CDC on mortality rate and contagiousness of various viruses
CFR = mortality rate
R0 = metric to indicate how contagious a virus is

In the image above, you can see that COVID-19 appears to be about as contagious (R0) as the regular flu, however the mortality rate (CFR) is more in line with the Spanish Flu.

This is why people are taking COVID-19 seriously.

Some experts think that the observed COVID-19 mortality rate may be inflated because many cases are unreported. This may be true, however many cases of annual flu also go unreported. The truth is, nobody is absolutely certain of the actual death rate of COVID-19, but based on current reporting, 2% is a reasonable benchmark.

There is no reason to panic. There is reason to take precautions as with any normal precautionary hygienic practices.

As many others are saying, we need to wash hands and avoid touching our faces.

For more health information, here is a link to the CDC page on how best to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

The elderly and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk for fatality.

If we continue to see confirmed cases rise in the US, then expect more school closures and cancellations of conferences/meetings.

The Pharma industry is working around the clock to develop a vaccine, but even if initial human testing goes well, this vaccine wouldn’t be ready for at least a year. I am personally no advocate for a vaccines or vaccinating my family or myself. As always, you can always seek the advice of good functional medical doctor before deciding to vaccinate or not. Many groups are currently developing anti-virals, antibodies and vaccines against COVID-19, to learn more about these efforts, here is an excellent resource.

Viruses are like the pirates of the animal kingdom.

They climb inside the cells of humans and then hijack our cellular machinery in order to replicate themselves.

As a biochemist, I am impressed by the efficiency of this system. When you think of all the work humans go through to create offspring (online dating, marriage, etc.), it is remarkable to see how quickly a virus can get the job done.

Okay, I am going to leave it right there for now… I wish everyone the best. If you have more questions of concerns please don’t hesitate to ask me. drmicah@620chiropractic.com
